General Secretary Jiang Zeming, when recieving the members of the national college student report group named "on the way to becoming useful persons", is shaking hands and talking with Yuan Yuli, a student of Wuhan University studying for her doctorate. Cheng Jinsong, a master degree candidate, and Zhang Xueji, a doctoral candidate, of Chemistry Department won a special prize respectively in two All-China College Students' Competitions in Scientific and Technological Application. During the past 100-odd years, Wuhan University fostered for China over 0.23 million qualified personnel of various kinds, many of whom became the State's pillars.
      


Wuhan University's team total grade got the 4th, 6th and 3rd, 5th places among all colleges and universities of China respectively in the 3rd ,4th ,5th and 6th All-China College Students' "Challenge Cup" Competitions in Scientific and Technological Achievements. Wuhan University's debate team won the champion of the year 2000's "Huangshan Mountain Cup" debate contest among the Chinese universities and colleges, and on behalf of the Chinese college students the team attended the international college student debate contest held in Singapore.
During the past twenty years, Wuhan University fostered over 3000 foreign students who become a driving force for the friendship and exchanges between China and foreign countries upon their graduation from the university. Pictured is Mr.Karim Massimov, the Minister of communications of Kazakhstan who is back to Wuhan University for a visit as an alumni. Many students of Wuhan University got the glorious titles such as "10 national models of three-good students", and "national models of excellent student cadres", and a pretty large number of students' collectives were chosen as "national outstanding collectives of the young students".
