. A Brief Introduction to Wuhan University

Wuhan University, set up in 1893, lies at the foot of picturesque Luojia Hill by the side of the East Lake, the most charming place of Wuhan, a large city of strategic importance in Central China, and is directly under the administration of the Education Ministry of the People*s Republic of China.

The university now has 29 colleges and various branches of learning, including science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, literature, history, philosophy, law, economics, education and management, 85 undergraduate specialties, 189 disciplines and specialties awarding master*s degrees, 99 disciplines and specialties awarding doctorates, 11 post-doctoral research programs, and a number of the State*s key laboratories, the State*s discipline laboratories, the State*s engineering technology research centers, and national bases for fostering basic science personnel. It has 5,000-odd teachers, including 3,000-odd professors and associate professors, among whom are a number of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Eurasian Academy of Sciences. Among its 40,000-odd students at the university, there are 600-odd foreign students, and 8,000-odd graduate students studying for their master*s degrees or doctorates.

The College of Foreign Students Education (Or: The Foreign Students Education School求求fses) of Wuhan University is a special organ in charge of the university*s various kinds of foreign students enrolment, management, and the Chinese language specialty teaching and training, as well as one of the whole China*s examination centers for HSK examination and the examination for the qualifications of the teachers teaching Chinese language to foreign students. The college, with rich teaching resources and a comparatively higher teaching and scientific research level, has 25 teachers teaching Chinese language to foreigners, including 15 professors and associate professors, 4 members of the World Chinese Language Society for Foreigners, and 23 members of China*s Chinese Language Society for Foreigners.

()The College*s Enrolment Categories

1.Chinese Language Class for Bachelor*s Degree (schooling length: 4 years)

The required courses of the discipline: Chinese language, Chinese characters, spoken Chinese, listening (or; aural ) comprehension, reading, writing, modern Chinese grammar and rhetoric, an introduction to contemporary China, general history of China, an introduction to Chinese culture, ancient Chinese language, literature of modern and contemporary China, social practice, school year-end thesis, graduation thesis, etc.

The elective courses of the discipline: Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting, intermediate and advanced seeing-hearing-and-speaking, spoken Chinese for economy and trade, newspapers-and-periodicals reading, selected readings in modern and contemporary Chinese literature, translation, news listening comprehension, the culture of Hubei Province, Chinese language for social sciences, an introduction to linguistics, traditional culture of China, the use of Chinese reference books, Chinese function words, analyses of misused Chinese, Chinese folkways culture, Chinese humane geography, Chinese philosophy, Chinese language and culture, etc.

2. Class for Advanced Studies of Chinese Language (short-term class: 6 months at most; long-term class: over 6 months)

Types of class: class for elementary study of Chinese language, class for intermediate study of Chinese language, and class for high-level study of Chinese language (HSK examination is a must for each type of the class)

Teaching content: courses of class for elementary study of Chinese language求求basic Chinese language, basic spoken Chinese, basic listening comprehension, Chinese characters, etc.; courses of class for intermediate study of Chinese language求求intermediate Chinese language, intermediate spoken Chinese, intermediate listening comprehension, intermediate seeing-hearing-and-speaking, writing, reading, etc.; courses of class for high-level study of Chinese language求求advanced Chinese language, advanced spoken Chinese, advanced listening comprehension, advanced seeing-hearing-and-speaking, newspapers-and-periodicals reading, news listening comprehension, HSK examination guide, etc. At the same time, according to the need, other courses for the study of Chinese language can be taken as elective ones.

3. Chinese Culture Class (2 weeks to 6 months)

Types of the class: Chinese traditional culture class, Chinese language and culture class, Chinese martial arts and qigong class, Chinese culture tourism class, etc.; meanwhile other classes can be run in the light of the two parties* cultural exchange agreement.

Teaching content: to strengthen the students* ability to express themselves orally in Chinese and their command of Chinese language and culture, offered for them are the courses concerning respectively the literature of ancient China, the arts of Beijing opera, Chinese calligraphy art, the art of traditional Chinese painting, Chinese martial arts, Chinese taijiquan, Chinese swordsmanship, Chinese tourist culture, Chinese food (or: dietary) culture, Chinese folkways culture, etc., also offered are lectures on special topics and after-class learning, usually in a combined way.

. Application Procedure

(i)Application Objects and Qualifications

1.Class for Advanced (or: Graduate) Studies of Chinese Language

Applicants are required to have the qualifications: graduation from a secondary school, in good health, interest in Chinese language, under 55 (years old).

2.Chinese Culture Class

The class can be started if there are over 15 applicants who are in good health and under 65 (years old).

3. Those Applying for Their Formal Schooling Record of Undergraduate Studies

must be graduates from a senior middle school, in good health and under 25 (years old); those who apply for the study of science and (or) engineering, and have passed at least HSK Examination Band 3, and those who apply for the study of liberal arts and have passed at least HSK Examination Band 6, can directly start their study in the relevant colleges or departments; those who fail to pass the examination can at first apply for their study of Chinese language for one year in Wuhan University before their study in the relevant colleges or departments; those who apply for the study of science or engineering must pass the centralized examination organized by the Chinese government for foreigh students before their study in the relevant colleges or departments of Wuhan University.

4. Graduate Students for Master*s Degrees

Those who apply for being master*s degree graduate students must complete one year study in Wuhan University, or be graduates from a university or college, in good health, and pass the graduate students* entrance examination given by Wuhan University before their admission (into the university). The foreign students who have proved themselves in Wuhan University to be excellent undergraduate graduates can be admitted as graduate students for master*s degrees without being examined provided they are recommended by the college or department where they studied.

5. Graduate Students for Doctorates

Those who have got their master*s degrees, are in good health, and passed the university*s entrance examination of graduate students for doctorates can be enrolled as graduate students for doctorates

6. Ordinary Graduate Students

Those who apply for being ordinary graduate students must have a college schooling over 2 years, be generally under 45 (years old) and finish their studying within 2 years.

7. Advanced Graduate Students

Those who apply for being advanced graduate students must have their master*s degrees or associate professor title(s) , be under the age of 50, and finish their studying generally within one year.

() Application Time and Formalities

1.Application Time

Those who plan to start their study in autumn are to finish their application before June 15 of the same year; those who plan to start their study in spring are to finish their application before December 15 of the previous year. All the material of application is to be mailed or faxed to the office of the College of Foreign Students Education of Wuhan University. Those who apply for class for Advanced Studies of Chinese Language or Chinese Culture Class can at any time directly contact the college office.

2. Application Formalities

Those who apply for Chinese government*s scholarship in order to study in Wuhan University must submit by themselves their application to their country*s government department or relevant organization in charge of sending students to study abroad, or to the Chinese embassy (or consulate) in their country.

Those who apply for their studying in Wuhan University at their own expense can directly contact the college office and ask for the admission brochures, Wuhan University foreign students application forms and physical examination forms for foreigners. The applicants must also fill in the application forms in detail and go through their physical examinations as required.

() The Material Required of Application

1. Those who apply for China*s scholarship should handle the material according to the concerned agreement reached between the two governments.

2. Those who apply for over 6 months* studying in Wuhan University are required to submit the following 6 kinds of material to Wuhan University:

(1) Wuhan University foreign students application form filled out by the applicant (with the applicant*s recent photo);

(2) physical examination form for foreigners filled out with the applicant*s recent photo (the duplicated one is also allowed);

(3) the applicant*s recent schooling certificate (the duplicated one);

(4) the written guarantee with the name, occupation, address and telephone number of the guarantor who is responsible for the applicant*s stay in China;

(5) the duplicated passport of the applicant;

(6) application fees: $ 40;

n.b.:

those who apply for their studying for master*s degrees must submit, besides the above 6 kinds of material, the recommendation letters separately by two associate professors or professors; those who apply for their studying for doctorates must submit the above 6 kinds of material with 2 recommendation letters (for each applicant) by professors.

3. Those who apply for their studying in Wuhan University for less than 6 months are required to submit

(1) Wuhan University foreign students application form filled out by the applicant;

(2) application fees: $ 40.

. Admission and Registration

() After receiving and approving the application material and fees required, our college office is to send out Wuhan University admission notices and foreign students application forms for entry visa to China (JW 202 form) to the applicants before February 10 or July 15.

() All the foreign students admitted to Wuhan University must hold the admission notices and JW 202 forms and go to the Chinese embassy or consulate in their country to get the entry visa to China, and then as required in the admission notice, they must, holding the admission notices, JW 202 forms, passports, personal registration photos (8 for each person) and physical examination forms (including the original blood laboratory test reports, X-rays and electrocardiograms), come on schedule to the College of Foreign Students Education of Wuhan University and go through the registration formalities. Those who fail to go through their registration formalities on schedule without good reasons are regarded as the ones who voluntarily abandon their qualifications as the admitted students.

() The fees for each student of a Chinese culture class are to be agreed and fixed by the 2 parties according to the studying time, content and the tour cost.

() Accommodation fees

() The medical, living and teaching material costs are paid by the students themselves.

. Graduation Certificate, Degree Certificate and Graduate

Student Certificate

(1) The students for acquiring their formal schooling record can get the graduation certificates and the relevant degrees (certificates) from Wuhan University if they have completed all the courses and got all the credits required in the teaching program. Those who fail to get the required credits can only be given certificates of finishing their studies from the university.

() The students who study for no formal schooling record can be given the graduate student certificates by the university if they have completed all the courses required in the teaching program. Those who fail to fulfil their study required in the teaching program can only get the certificates showing that they have studied in Wuhan University.
